Lifeboat in a Box

Page content

A complete lifeboat station, delivered wherever it is needed.

In many coastal communities around the world, there is no rescue service to call when someone gets into difficulty in the water. Lifeboat in a Box was designed to change that.

Built from a shipping container, Lifeboat in a Box provides the essential facilities of a lifeboat station in a single transportable, self-contained unit. It can be delivered to any location and operate immediately, giving communities a rescue capability where none existed before.

How it began

Lifeboat in a Box was Atlantic Pacific’s first project. Following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, our founder learned that survivors in Kamaishi had heard cries for help from the water, but had no lifeboat with which to respond.

At UWC Atlantic in South Wales, a team of students designed and built a lifeboat and a mobile lifeboat station. In 2016, Atlantic Pacific delivered it to Kamaishi and trained local residents to operate it, establishing the first volunteer-run lifeboat service in Japan, which remains in operation today.

More than equipment

A lifeboat is only as effective as the crew who operate it. Every Lifeboat in a Box is delivered with training for local volunteers, so that the community has both the equipment and the skills to respond safely and independently.

Commission a Lifeboat in a Box

Atlantic Pacific welcomes enquiries from communities, local authorities, humanitarian organisations and funders who wish to establish a rescue capability where none exists. Each Lifeboat in a Box is designed around the needs of the community it will serve, from the choice of vessel to the training of its crew.

Innovation with the environment in mind

At Atlantic Pacific, innovation goes hand in hand with care for the environment in which we work. Our students already recover plastic from the sea and recycle it into new products. Our long-term ambition is to build a lifeboat from recovered plastic, turning waste from the ocean into a means of saving lives at sea.
