Local Lifesavers
Training young people to keep their own communities safe.
The best rescuer is the one who is already there when something goes wrong. Local Lifesavers provides free water safety, first aid and rescue training to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, who are among those most at risk of drowning.
By training young people where they live, Local Lifesavers builds a network of capable, confident lifesavers within the communities that need them most.
What participants gain
- Water safety: an understanding of the risks of open water, including cold water shock, and how to stay safe in and around it.
- First aid: the skills to respond calmly and effectively to an emergency.
- Rescue skills: practical training in how to help someone in difficulty in the water.
- Qualifications and experience: recognised qualifications and practical experience that open a route into careers in the emergency services and the lifesaving sector.
All Local Lifesavers training is free for the young people who take part.
Where Local Lifesavers runs
Local Lifesavers is delivered in the communities around Atlantic Pacific’s three bases: Newham in East London, the Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales, and Kamaishi in Japan.
Beyond the programme
Atlantic Pacific welcomes Local Lifesavers alumni who wish to stay involved, whether as volunteers or, in time, as instructors. Our hope is that young people trained in their own community will go on to train the next generation of local lifesavers.
