Learn it, lead it, pass it on
Our new AP@AC cohort, 18 first-year students at UWC Atlantic, have had their first search and rescue session at sea. Their instructors include our returning second years, who spent the start of term training to teach alongside AP's expert instructors. A year ago they were the ones learning.
When young people learn a skill, they can save a life. When they learn to teach it, they can pass it on to many more.
Trained, not told. Rebuilding Wadi Love.
Our students have also started a full refit of our rescue boat, Wadi Love, guided by our Technical Coordinator, Rahim.
With the tubes off, they began by circling every dent and ding on the hull so nothing gets missed. Over the coming weeks they'll sand, fill, polish and wax her, swap the old fibreglass deck for a treated wood one, refit the fixtures and tubes, and take her out for sea trials.
Search and rescue isn't just what happens on the water. It's knowing your equipment inside out, and when these students head out on Wadi Love, they'll know her that well because they rebuilt her themselves.
